Drivers: Do you get mad if some one were to pass you on the motor way? Becouse, the Other day a car in front of me was going a bit slower then I, So, I pasted her. She gave me a drity look. And she looked pissed. And a week ago I pasted a guy in a truck and he looked mad at me. You know, nothing personal, I just would like to go just little faster then they. I'm not a really a speeder. Dose this happen to you?

I don't mind getting passed. As long as they don't go in front of me and suddenly going slower than my cruising speed. I mean what's the point? I cruise 110km/h, they pass probably going 120km/h and then slow down to 100km/h, then i have to pass them at 110km/h, then they repeat the process again. I personally hate getting passed. But I figure it's because I am a 17 year old male. So it's probably normal. HAha not at all...i'd rather they just pass me rather than get all antsy & anxious behind me cause i'm stopping like a mile before the light. LOL i get it. I tend to get this a lot. i have this weird habit, i dont kno if its cause i drive a stick or what, but i always get hella slow as soon as i see the light is red so that by the time i get there i dont have to stop... sometimes it is effective & sometimes it isn't, but whatever the case, i almost always have people behind me either change their lanes, make it a statement to change their lane, go hella fast, & cut right in fronna me ten slam on their brakes, or wave & waddle their hands in the air while as$ f&cking my car making a very bold statement about their frustration. Much of this almost never happened where i used to live (altho i would get a lot of tailgaters) but ever since i have moved to southern california people do it A Lot. i can guarntee it at least once a day & the distance i drive in total per day is about 10-15 minutes. i just don't get it tho cause it's not like they're gonna get anywhere any faster. The light is RED therefore cutting one car ahead is not gonna get them anywhere any sooner than it would have if they had stayed behind me....but i guess i understand the frustration cause there is hella traffic out here & driving even short distances is quite frustrating. id rather have them in front of me than behind me lol. It does make me mad when there is a traffic jam and they cut in front of me then slam on there brakes which then i have to slam on mine. Gets very annoying. Thats when the hand flies out the window and my horn starts honking. If someone is following too close to me i usually will drive slower if im already at speed limit and wave them around because i like my car too much to get it rear ended. You never know when someones brakes will give out. Or if its a toyota lmao... No, because the only people that pass me are those that I let pass me or that are just crazier then I am. Most often both! I have seen this on MANY occasions. Don't know WHY it's such a big deal to these people. I don't mind getting passed they are just ticket sponges the way I see it and sometimes I do see them pulled over 10 miles up the road all I do then is waive and laugh.

Engine diagnostics on all car and light truck engines manufactured in 1997 may sound like a daunting task. However, due to Environmental Protection Agency mandates, On-Board Vehicle diagnostics became standardized in 1996. So, troubleshooting engine problems is fundamentally the same for all makes and models of engines, no matter the capacity of the engine or the amount of cylinders it possesses. An OBD-II scanner can effectively begin the process and lead you to specific trouble spots. Handheld diagnostic tools are never the complete answer, however. After finding out where to look, you will still need to get your hands into the engine.

Consult your scanner's handbook for operational procedures. OBD-II scanners are all the same in spirit, but each brand and model has different operational procedures. While you are acquainting yourself with your scanner's handbook, consult the pages on generic OBD-II coding. Most handbooks have a list. Also, look up your vehicle's specific OBD-II codes online. General Motors, Chrysler and all the other automotive companies also have brand-specific supplemental OBD-II codes. Print out the codes for your exact vehicle.

Get behind your vehicle's steering wheel, and place the scanner's hand book and the supplemental material into the navigator's seat. You will return to both later.

Plug your OBD-II scanner's cable into your vehicle's Diagnostic Data Link. The DLC's location varies by make and model. In most vehicles, it is located on the driver's side of the vehicle, beneath the dash, and somewhere between the left kick panel and the gas pedal.

Crank the engine or switch turn the ignition key to "On." Different scanners call for one or the other.

Key in a "retrieve" for "read" command, if your scanner does not automatically pull the codes once it detects a data stream from the diagnostic computer. Buttons are located in different places on different scanners, so consult your scanner's manual for the exact instructions.

Copy both trouble and pending codes onto a note pad, once they appear on the scanner's read-out. List the codes by order of importance. Put the trouble codes at the top, since the OBD system has more recorded instances of those malfunctions. Place the pending codes at the bottom of the list, as they can either be freak occurrences or new problems trending towards "trouble" status.

Pick up the scanner's manual and the printed-out material you left in the navigator's seat. Look up all the codes on your list. Copy the definitions next to the alpha-numeric code numbers.

Turn your vehicle's engine off, as well as the electrical system. Remove your scanner's cable from the DLC outlet. Pop the trunk and exit the vehicle. Start at the top of your list and investigate every part of the engine that corresponds with an OBD-II code. Cross codes out once you eliminate them from consideration. Underline the codes that correspond with verifiable damage or needed maintenance and repairs.
Tips & Warnings
Some garages and parts stores may lend their scanner for free, but many do not and charge fees. An OBD-II scanner is such a useful tool that it is worth the investment. You will save money on garage diagnostic fees.

Engines are complex machines and can sometimes be hard to troubleshoot. Certain parts, such as the knock sensor, can be hard to reach and require removing a lot of parts just to gain access. This is true for all vehicles, including the 1995 Ford Aspire. There is a way to cut down on false leads and misspent time. The Ford's On-Board Diagnostic system can provide guidance. It will not solve your problem, but it will give you places to look. Ford's Electronic Engine Control system monitors malfunctions and assigns trouble codes. You can access these codes and then make a repair list.

Step by Step :

Climb behind the Aspire's steering wheel. Start the engine of your 1995 Ford Aspire and let it idle until it reaches normal operating temperature. Then shut off the engine and pop the hood.

Locate the "Self Test Outlet" and the "Self Test Input" inside the Aspire's engine compartment. The STO and STI are located at the rear of the engine compartment in the left-hand corner. The STO is a six-sided hub with six ports. The STI is a single port on a wire. Both will be located right next to each other.

Place one end of a jumper wire into the STI. Place the other end into the STO's ground or "Test Out" slot. This will be the left port on the bottom row of two.

Insert your key into the ignition and turn it to the "Accessories" position. Count how many times the "Service Engine" light flashes. Ford's EEC-IV flash codes are two-character numbers. The first number will be conveyed in a series of long flashes. The second number will be represented with shorter flashes. For example, EEC-IV code 33 will be three long flashes, a short pause and three short flashes. A longer pause will signify the separation of whole flash code sets. Write down all the code numbers.

Turn off the engine. Remove the jumper wire from the STI and STO and close the engine compartment. Look up Ford's EEC-IV codes online or in a vehicle-specific shop manual.

Although retail sales and leasing started in late 1997, by the middle of 1999 fewer than 2,500 electric vehicles had been sold or leased throughout the United States, mainly in California, where state mandates required them. In comparison, during the same period, about 24 million conventional cars and light trucks were sold or leased. Chapter 7: Diesels and Alternatively Powered Vehicles t EC EVs have been slow to catch on, largely because the industry still considers them experimental and isn't mass-producing them. In fact, some automakers that had begun active sales of EVs have recently stopped making them. And because storage batteries don't hold much of a charge in extreme cold, the range of a battery-electric vehicle drops way down as the thermometer edges near zero. So why are some people still excited about EVs? Because tremendous work is being done on alternatives to the storage battery — alternatives that could make emission-free private transportation a reality instead of a mere promise. Fuel cetts The best answer may well be the fuel cell, a relative old technology that's being adapted and improved in the search for a way to make electric cars more user-friendly. You can see an example of a fuel cell in Figure 7-13. The fuel cell was invented in the mid-1800s and was put into everyday use by the military and the aerospace industry more than 40 years ago. Nowadays, many hospitals and fast-food restaurants have fuel cells that provide them with electricity so that they are not dependent on a public electrical grid that can black out with no warning. Essentially, a fuel cell is a processing plant that creates electrical current from hydrogen and oxygen, which is passed over a catalyst, usually a micro­scopically thin sheet of platinum. The electrical current is then fed directly to the vehicle's electric motor for propulsion. Cells are linked together into "stacks" to increase the electrical output. A test car just unveiled by Mercedes-Benz, the Necar 4 (which stands for New Electric Car 4), uses two stacks, each with 160 cells.

The beauty of a fuel cell is that it takes the place of a storage battery and pro­duces electricity directly from a plentiful element: hydrogen. Once perfected, fuel cell-electric cars will have the range and "refill-ability" of gasoline-powered cars. Of course, the method of getting hydrogen to the car in the first place is still up in the air. 156 Part II: What Makes It Go?. Figure 7-13: A fuel cell. One method would require construction of thousands of hydrogen filling sta­tions where motorists would pull in to fill their cars' tanks with either liquid or gaseous hydrogen. Still to be resolved, of course, is how to finance con­struction of such a delivery system or infrastructure. The industry also has not yet settled on what form of hydrogen to use. Gaseous hydrogen, like CNG, would have to be stored in tanks that could withstand thousands of pounds of pressure. But liquid hydrogen has to be stored at unbelievably cold temperatures — 423 degrees below 0 — and then must be warmed up to function properly in a fuel cell. A fuel-cell electric car that ran directly on hydrogen would produce virtually no emissions — the only thing dribbling out of the tailpipe would be a trickle of distilled water formed in the interaction of the hydrogen and oxygen inside the cell! But because of the problems inherent in getting hydrogen to cars, some in the industry are considering another type of system. It appears that the hydrogen needed for a fuel cell to operate can be produced on-board a car or truck, dis­tilled, if you will, from a hydrocarbon fuel such as gasoline, methanol, or ethanol. The process requires the fuel to be turned into a vapor under high heat. That process produces carbon monoxide and a few other pollutants, so it isn't as clean as a system that uses hydrogen directly, but it's still far cleaner than an internal combustion engine. . Chapter 7: Diesels and Alternatively Powered Vehicles f C *7 Those problems aside, the cells that industry uses are far too large for auto­mobiles, and a good deal of work has gone into figuring out how to shrink them. Automakers have developed fuel cells that are small enough to put into test vehicles, although they are still 30 to 50 percent too heavy for commer­cial use. They still are about 10 times too costly to be considered for commercial use. But their time is coming. DaimlerChrysler has said that it will have fuel cell cars in the retail market by 2004. And the other major automakers won't be far behind.

Operating an electric Vehicle After automakers conquer the problems of how best to produce the electric­ity that an electric car needs, the rest is pretty easy. The electrics on the market today handle remarkably well and can hold their own on busy free­ways. They're not the cars to take on a long trip, but for commuting and most daily use, they're no different from their gasoline-powered cousins once you get past the fact that there's no engine under the hood and that you don't have to pull into a gas station unless you have to use the restroom or you get a nail in one of the special, low-rolling resistance tires. What is under the hood is a powerful electric motor — all the necessary wires and plumbing, plus all the equipment for conventional heating and air conditioning, power brakes, and power steering. You even find a conven­tional 12-volt battery to provide start-up power and keep the clock, power locks, and other electrically controlled devices in operation when the power plant is shut down. Inside, an electric car looks much the same as any other. (All but the EV-1 started life as conventional ICE vehicles and were modified to become electrics.) The biggest difference is on the instrument panel. Instead of a fuel gauge that shows how full the tank is, electric vehicles have digital readouts that show how much charge is left in the battery and how economically — or not — you are driving. And those with regenerative braking systems have a gauge or readout that shows when power is being generated and stored. (Regenerative braking uses the energy of the braking action to generate elec­tricity to replace a very small part of what is consumed when accelerating.) Several electric cars also have a readout that estimates the number of miles remaining before they run out of juice. Some, like Nissan's Altra EV, also have a digital tachometer that tells you how fast the electric motor is revolving. And it's much faster than the crankshaft in a gasoline-fueled car! Driving down the freeway at 74 mph and glancing down at the tach to see that you're cruising at 16,000 rpm is unsettling! 158 Part II: What Makes It Go?. The other oddity — and it's fun to watch the guys at the car wash try to figure this out — is that an electric vehicle doesn't do much of anything when the key is turned on. Sometimes a small cooling fan kicks in, and the "On" or "Ready" indicator light on the dashboard lights up. But that's it. No roar, no sputter. Pump the accelerator all you want; you get no action. An electric motor doesn't rev up until you engage the transmission. When you engage the transmission, you send a signal to the motor controller, which boosts the voltage to the motor in response to the pressure you place on the accelerator (which looks and feels just like a gas pedal).
